West Houston Shotokan Karate Club

Twice a week is all this club asks. West Houston Shotokan Karate Club practices Thursdays from 7:30 PM and Sunday mornings from 9:30 inside the Houston Academy of Dance on Memorial Drive, a deliberately spare schedule that reflects its nonprofit, club-style roots. The group affiliates with Shotokan Karate of America, a nonprofit organization teaching traditional karate-do since 1955, and welcomes newcomers aged 11 and up alongside adults. There is no belt-mill pressure here, just fundamentals, kata, and kumite in the classic Shotokan tradition; Google currently shows a 4.0 rating from a couple of reviews. For west Houston residents seeking affordable, traditional karate without contracts, the model is hard to beat. First visits happen at 14520 Memorial Drive in Houston; see westhoustonshotokan.com or call 713-568-8303.
