The Blackbelt Academy of Uvalde

Free five-week karate courses for local elementary students made headlines for The Blackbelt Academy of Uvalde, where proprietor PJ Talavera opened the ‘Hands Up for Robb’ program to second-through-fifth graders — a visible commitment to community that goes well beyond the tuition calendar. The academy teaches karate and martial arts fundamentals Monday through Thursday evenings on East Main Street, serving children, teens, and adults with belt-based progression, and visiting black belts from other Texas academies have traveled to Uvalde to share jiu-jitsu seminars on its mats. Google shows a 5.0 rating from its first reviewers. Cards are accepted for monthly tuition. Families can reach the school at 830-279-2288 or stop by 2031 E Main St to watch a class.
