Houston Martial Arts & Reality Based Combatives

Edged weapons, firearms, blunt-force tools, and ground combatives all appear in the curriculum at Houston Martial Arts & Reality Based Combatives, a Richmond Avenue school that deliberately steps outside both traditional martial arts and sport MMA. Its Dark Gift Combat Fighting System, presented through the Apex Tactical Institute, bills itself as combat scenario-driven training engineered for rapid proficiency rather than years of ritual, and traces its methods to Paul Vunak’s Progressive Fighting Systems and the R.A.T. ‘Rapid Assault Tactics’ its instructors say were used by Navy SEALs. The school claims a track record training military, government, law enforcement, and private security personnel. Classes meet just three evenings a week, Monday through Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM — a specialist’s schedule, not a gym’s. Interview the method yourself at 713-446-7973 or apextacticalinstitute.com.
